PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Police arrested a man who was in possession of a loaded handgun Friday morning.

33-year-old Elander L. Simmons was arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of a Firearm without a Valid FOID card, Aggravated Assault and Unlawful Possession of Cannabis.

Just after 11:30 a.m., police were called to a business in the 1000 block of West Detweiller Drive - near North Hale Avenue - regarding a male employee making threats to other staff.

When officers arrived, they located Simmons standing near the intersection of Hale and Detweiller. As officers approached, they saw Simmons discard a backpack he was carrying in a nearby parking lot.

Officers immediately located the backpack and found a loaded handgun inside. The firearm was seized, and Simmons was placed into custody.

No one was injured and Simmons is still being held at the Peoria County Jail. His bond is unknown.
