CHAMPAIGN COUNTY (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Public health leaders say a daycare center employee in the Rantoul area has tested positive for monkeypox.

It is the third case recorded in Champaign County, and experts are contact tracing kids and other staff at the daycare. Currently, no other cases have been found.

At the request of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, the FDA has authorized use of the monkeypox vaccine for anyone under 18, as long as they have a guardian’s approval.

Health leaders say the person who tested positive is isolating, and in good condition.

“Pediatricians are on-site, as we speak, to screen children for cases, and there are mobile testing and vaccines for their families. Health officials will continue to stay in contact with families, and provide information and resources in the coming days,” health leaders said Friday.

Governor JB Pritzker announced his administration will provide financial help to impacted families so they can quarantine safely, without fear of losing income or work.
