BLOOMINGTON (Heart of Illinois ABC) - If you want to find Bloomington native Caleb McClure, you better start by looking at the gym. The 17 year old, homeschooled athlete is at his hometown’s Be Strong Gym all the time working to get better. But he’s not working out to get better at a traditional sport like football or basketball. He’s working out to get better at the sport of working out. He’s working to get better at CrossFit.

“Basically it’s every other sport mixed together,” McClure said when asked to describe the sport. “You’ve got gymnastics, you’ve got weightlifting, you’ve got running, you’ve got swimming, biking, so like they could do a triathlon. They could mix a triathlon with max deadlift. They could do powerlifting. Pretty much you’ve got to be a jack of all trades. You’ve got to be good at everything within the sport.”

And McClure is a jack of all trades. He’s the number one ranked CrossFit athlete in the world in his age group and he attributes that success to the relentless work he puts in

“I train hard and I’m in here every single day,” McClure said. “I think it’s probably consistency most of all. Just coming in the gym every single day.”

Right now, McClure is training for next month’s CrossFit Games in Wisconsin but this will be his last year competing in the 16-17 year old division. Next year he’ll graduate to the open division with the adults and while it’ll be a challenge that’s also where he and his coaches think he can make a career out of the sport and become a professional CrossFit athlete.

“We decided to make a real run at this thing,” Be Strong Gym owner Drew Whitted said. “We have a real plan for him over the next three, four, five years so it’s a great opportunity for both of us and I consider myself and Be Strong very lucky to have him here.”

And McClure is very excited to pursue his future in CrossFit.

“My goal is to win the Crossfit Games this year but I also want to make a career out of this sport. I want to win the Crossfit Games as an individual where there’s a little more money in it and find a way where I could just work out for a living. That would be my dream.”
