PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Peoria will the home of a major national figure skating competition which is expected to bring in thousands to the Heartland.

The United States Figure Skating will hold it’s 2023 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championship at the Peoria Civic Center in March of next year.

This area was previously the host city for the Upper Great Lakes Regional Championships in 2019.

The teams competing will first have to qualify at the regional competition in Rockford.

Each team is comprised of 6 to 16 people.

Beth Reusch with Discover Peoria says, it’s the attributes of the Civic Center which won over the figure skating committee, “the ice arena is amazing and there’s plenty of seats for everyone. It’s a great city. We’re reasonably priced. Peoria is growing as far as hosting sporting events and conventions.”

She says this will help bring in more revenue to the local stores and economy.

“The competition is ready to bring in 1,200 competitors and hopefully around 6,000 people come to the Peoria region; to stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, shop at our shops. The region is very excited to host this event.”

The competition festivities will begin in late February with the finals held on March first 2023. Tickets go on sale this Fall.

Volunteers are needed! If you are interested you can email events@usfigureskating.org.
