PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Monday was National HIV Testing Day and a local organization makes it accessible to get tested.

JOLT Harm Reduction Peoria offers free and confidential HIV tests at both their Peoria and Pekin locations. The organization recommends that everyone gets tested for HIV at least once during the course of their life because they may have the virus and not even know it.

“It’s important to go out and get tested for HIV because about 160,000 have HIV and don’t know it and an overwhelmingly majority of them contract it from another person who didn’t know it themselves,” Chris Schaffner, JOLT director, said.

JOLT offers testing Monday-Friday from Noon-4 p.m.
