EAST PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Some of the most talented sport shooters from around the Midwest gathered in East Peoria over the weekend to take part in a national competition.
The Peoria Skeet & Trap Club was one of 14 sites around the country to host the Kolar U.S. Open Skeet Championship.
47 shooters from multiple states competed using 12-, 20-, 28- and 410-gauge shotguns to shoot flying targets.
“Once you learn the physical part of it, it’s more of a mental fitness game,” committee chairman Greg Hufnagel said. “It’s a lot of camaraderie - you meet a lot of good people with similar interests, but from a lot different areas.”
Around 650 people competed in total, and all the scores from each site were entered into a database for judges in San Antonio, TX to tally up.
