PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Two local organizations teamed up Thursday afternoon for a block party to spread awareness about sexual health and violence prevention resources.

Peoria’s House of Hope and local nonprofit Central Illinois Friends invited guests to enjoy some grub, and a wellness mobile was there to provide free STI testing.

Several other groups, including PCCEO, also set up booths to talk about their services.

Organizers say Peoria County leads the entire state in STI rates, and it takes the right education and resources to change that.

“We don’t talk about it, we don’t provide comprehensive sexual education, and we create red tape that prevents people from accessing care. This is an effort to cut through that red tape,” said Deric Kimler of Central Illinois Friends.

Illinois has the 12th highest STI rate in the country, and Kimler adds one in seven people who have HIV don’t even know they have it.
