Peoria Notre Dame’s Cooper Koch a big B1G target
Junior-to-be says Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue are frontrunners
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - At midnight on June 15th, Peoria Notre Dame junior Cooper Koch’s phone started buzzing.
“Yeah, there were a few rings,” the junior-to-be said. “Wisconsin texted me and some others called trying to get ahold of me, but I was sleeping.”
The 15th was the first day that college coaches could officially and directly contact the rising junior class but Koch is already pretty deep in his recruiting journey. He’s got 8 Division one offers, including 5 from Big Ten teams and the interest is big. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery and Wisconsin coach Greg Gard were both in Normal over the weekend to watch Koch play at the Midwest Crossroads Showcase. He says he knows when they’re there but just tries to play his game.
“Yeah I take notice before the game but once it starts I try not to look over and stuff,” Koch said.
Koch says the Hawkeyes and Badgers are big players in his recruitment and he’s approaching a decision
“There’s definitely three frontrunners with Iowa, Wisconsin and Purdue,” Koch said. “I think it’s gonna happen before junior basketball season starts this year.
A college decision is coming for Koch but even though he’s already garnered tons of interest, he still wants to get better and wants to continue to improve his game
“I’ve been trying to work on handling the ball more and shooting the 3,” Koch said. “Coming off the ball screens and attacking the rim.”
Already such a talented player, Koch realizes there’s still room to grow and his coaches notice just how much he wants to get better.
“He’s getting better and the great thing about Cooper is he works,” Peoria Notre Dame head coach Tom Lacher said. “He’s an old fashioned gym rat. He wants to get better. He wants to get stronger. His IQ is really good and it’s getting better.
Cooper Koch is talented and hard-working and when you put those two things together, a Big Ten college commitment is on the horizon for the Irish star.
