(Heart of Illinois ABC) - Some of the state’s best football players descended on Bloomington today for Day 1 of preparations for the Illinois High School Shrine game on Saturday morning. 11 local players dot the the rosters for Saturday’s game and got a chance to meet their teammates and go through walk-throughs and preliminary practices with their coaches on Tuesday. They’ll be at Illinois Wesleyan all week leading up to an 11:00 a.m. kickoff for Saturday’s game.

Bloomington was also home to the IHSA’s annual golf outing on Tuesday and the special guest was University of Illinois football coach Bret Bielema who himself was an Illinois high school athlete. In his keynote address, he touted the benefits of high school athletics and the importance they have in all walks of life.

On Wednesday night, Peoria-area softball umpires will host their annual Senior Salute game as a way of giving back to the athletes they’ve worked with over the last few years.

In basketball, Dee-Mack’s Lane Thomann returned from injury and dominated in Saturday’s IBCA State All-Star Game, scoring a game-high 23 points for the Class 1A/2A North Team and earning MVP honors.
