Caution on the road; students learning by experience
MOSSVILLE (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The Tire Rack Street Survival program taught students driving skills by mimicking difficult driving situations. Their philosophy was learning by doing, they set up the classroom in the parking lot of Caterpillar. There were multiple obstacle courses for drivers aged 15-21 to master. That included figure 8′s, wet roads, tight turns, and a semi-truck to visualize blind stops.
“It’s basically muscle memory, so if somebody cuts them off or if they blow a tire they’re going to know what to do. We have lots of them call us and say “I don’t even know how I did it,” Instructor Rick Largen said.
Along with the hands-on experience the 30 students sat for lectures explaining all the methods for safe driving.
At the end of the program, drivers were left with a wealth of knowledge and a certificate that they could show to some insurance companies that could help lower their payments.
