PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - A trip to remember. Everyone from The Greater Peoria Honor Flight is back home after spending the day in Washington, D.C.

The General Wayne A. Downing International Airport was packed with visitors late Thursday night to welcome home the nation’s finest.

Heart of Illinois ABC’s Paige Blanzy was there to chat with a few vets coming back from the trip. Elton Wiegand served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959; spending 16 months in Germany.

Elton comes from a family of fighters. He told Heart of Illinois ABC his father fought in WWI and his brothers in The Vietnam War. While Elton looked forward to seeing all of the memorials in Washington, D.C., he said one of the most emotional parts of the journey was the welcome home reunion.
