Cemetery visits highlight honor, respect for fallen on Memorial Day weekend
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - As per tradition, local veterans are taking the time to visit cemeteries around the area to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.
Veterans gathered Saturday at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria for an annual Memorial Day service, hosted by the American Legion Post #2. Members visit veterans’ graves across the area throughout the weekend, as they do every year for the holiday. The ceremony included a eulogy, as well as the 21 gun salute customary for military funerals.
For veterans like Roger Monroe, Americans are in need of a reminder of the sacrifice of those who serve.
“We shall never forget, nor should we forget, the 1.3 million American men and women who died to protect the freedoms we enjoy today,” he says, who delivered an address at the event.
Monroe adds he’s grateful to share in the opportunity to take part in Memorial Day, and hopes while Americans enjoy their freedoms, they acknowledge those who put their lives on the line to protect them.
