Highlights from baseball regional finals and previews of sectional soccer
(Heart of Illinois ABC) - More regional champions were crowned on Monday as small schools baseball teams vied for regional titles. At the Class 2A Eureka Regional, the host Hornets beat Heart of Illinois Conference rival El Paso-Gridley 9-1 to claim the regional title. They’ll play Monticello at the Millikin Sectional on Thursday. Elsewhere in 2A, Pontiac raced past Tremont 9-1 to win the Olympia Regional. Pontiac is set to play St. Joseph-Ogden in the Millikin Sectional on Wednesday.
In the Class 1A Roanoke-Benson Regional Final, LeRoy beat the host Rockets 3-0 to advance to the IWU Sectional where they’ll play Illini Bluffs after the Tigers beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 8-6 to win the Princeville Regional title. LeRoy-IB is set for Thursday Also advancing to the IWU Sectional is Delavan. The Panthers beat Heyworth 6-1 and will play Henry in the Sectional Semifinals on Wednesday.
The Class 3A baseball regionals kicked off with a 16-1 win for Limestone against Peoria High. The Rockets are set to play Morton in a regional semifinal on Wednesday night.
Tuesday brings sectional semifinal night in big schools soccer and features a pair of great matchups in the Peoria Notre Dame sectional. In the first matchup, the host Irish welcome Morton to town. PND and the Potters tied 2-2 in their regular season meeting. In the nightcap, it’s an all Mid-Illini battle as Dunlap takes on Washington. The Eagles and Panthers also battled to a draw, 1-1, in their regular season matchup.
