New renderings of South Peoria Supermarket opening this Summer
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Months in the making, we are getting the first glimpse into the finished ‘Harvest Supermarket’ a store that aims to end South Peoria’s food desert.
New renderings show the outside and inside of the former Aldi and Save A Lot location on Western Avenue. Peoria-are Pastor Chuck Brown is developing the property into a new grocery store that he hopes will also become a community gathering place.
“Regardless of the economics in every community, I think we as Americans deserve choice,” Brown said. “We deserve fresh, affordable food.”
The store will feature supermarket staples alongside fresh produce and meats. It will also include a coffee shop and “Harvest Grill”, a restaurant serving Brown’s late wife’s Jerk Chicken and more.
“The Harvest Grill and the Coffee kiosk simply to give people a place where they can meet and eat,” Brown said. “Something that we thought would be a great asset for the community on the south side.”
Originally slated for a Spring opening, Pastor Brown says it will now open in July. In the meantime, the store will get a new poured concrete floor, shelves and a new coat of paint.
“Fresh fruits and vegetables and meats available seven days a week, that’s great for the residents, who desperately need it,” Peoria District 1 City Councilwoman Denise Jackson said.
