GLASFORD (Heart of Illinois ABC) -Illini Bluffs senior ace Kierston McCoy is no stranger to the big game. McCoy pitched in the state title game as a freshman and was the winning pitcher in the Tigers’ state title win last year. She knows what it takes to have success in the big game.

“Personally, I try not to picture everybody behind the stands,” McCoy said. “I try to focus one game at a time. It’s just like any other regular game and push to win.”

With that experience comes lessons learned for McCoy. She’s seen it as a freshman, she’s seen it as a junior. Now she’s excited to take what she’s learned and apply it to senior year as the Tigers search for back-to-back state championships.”

“Oh yeah, I’m so excited, I’m motivated,” McCoy said. “I want to go back so bad. As a freshman I definitely had a lot of pressure on me. I was a little nervous to fail my team in a way but I definitely just kept a strong mindset and pushed through anything.”

The big-game experience is huge for Bradley-bound McCoy but so is who she’s been looking up to her whole life. Her mom, Kari, was also a standout pitcher at Illini Bluffs and then at Bradley.

“Ever since I was little, like seven years old, I picked up a ball and she was my pitching coach and we always went out in the yard and just started pitching from there,” McCoy said. “We definitely butt heads sometimes but it’s definitely really special and especially going to Bradley and following in her footsteps, it’s always been a dream of mine so I’m extremely excited to get there.”

The dream of Bradley is on the horizon, but before that Kierston McCoy has another dream. She’s dreaming of back-to-back state titles at Illini Bluffs.
