First silo down; BioUrja demolition underway
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - One of the damaged silos at the Peoria BioUrja plant is finally down. On May 12th a grain explosion devastated the site and ever since then fire teams in Peoria, East Peoria, and Germantown Hills worked around the clock to keep the flames at bay.
After multiple tries with water and foam to put the fires out failed - Sunday morning Alpine Demolition came in and in just four hours the first silo was brought down. The silo was still burning after it fell and fire teams were determined to get the fire out and get the rest of the silos down.
“We feel a little bit better about it, especially with this coming down. I think it’s improving down here and it’s a less hazard for the community,” Assistant Peoria Fire Chief Rick Morgan said.
The timeline for each demolition is fluid but fire teams hoped to have an idea on Monday of when the next silo will fall.
