PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Strong to severe storms will be possible this evening, especially near and west of the Illinois River. We’ll see additional rain chances this weekend, especially on Sunday. More comfortable weather returns next week.

This Evening and Tonight:

Storms will form near and just east of the Illinois River late this afternoon and early this evening, and then move slowly east toward central Illinois. Storms should move into Knox and Fulton Counties sometime between 6-8 PM, and then they will slowly move toward the Illinois River after that.

Our highest rain chances and the best chance for strong or severe storms will be for areas near and west of the Illinois River. Severe weather will be possible through about 9-10 PM, but showers and non-severe storms could continue at times through tomorrow morning.

High winds up to 50-60 mph, large hail and heavy rain may be possible within any thunderstorm this evening. Our upper level winds are weak, which means that storms will move slowly. This will introduce a flash flooding risk as 2+” of rain may fall in spots. However, given the expected scattered nature of this evening’s storms, widespread flooding is not expected.

This Weekend/The Next Big Thing:

We’ll see a few showers linger into tomorrow morning, especially near and east of the Illinois River. Most of tomorrow will be dry with afternoon sunshine, although a few isolated storms may be possible near and east of I-55. If those storms do form, they could be strong at times. Highs tomorrow will be in the low to mid 80s.

Our Next Big Thing arrives on Sunday as a cold front moves through the area. Scattered showers and a few storms will be possible. Expect cooler weather on Sunday with highs in the 70s.

Showers will be possible on Wednesday with a few storms on Thursday. Expect chances for thunderstorms next weekend as well.
