PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - There’s a new soccer team coming to Peoria on Saturday. Peoria City is ready to kick off its inaugural season Saturday night when they host Minneapolis City SC at Shea Stadium. They play in the USL 2 league, a pre-professional circuit designed to get players to the pros. That means you can expect to see a lot of great college soccer players suit up for Peoria City this season

“I think we have a good group of current college soccer players that are playing at the highest level of college soccer currently,” head coach Ruben Resendes said. “But we also have a good mix of guys that are already out of the college game, whether it be semi-professionally or looking to break into the pro game.”

Peoria City’s roster has players from all over the world. Portugal, Ireland and Spain are just a few of the countries represented on the roster, but they’ve also got local talent. Peoria Notre Dame grads Noah Madrigal, McKay Lahood and Myles Sophanavong along with former Morton star Wes Gibson are all on the roster and they’re excited to be back representing their hometown area.

“We honestly probably never though we’d get this opportunity to play in this city again, Gibson said. “So it’s pretty cool just to be back home in front of our own families and the city of Peoria.”

They’re also excited to represent the kind of soccer talent that Peoria and the Heart of Illinois can produce.

“We’ve got a great opportunity to show that there’s a lot of talent here,” Lahood said. “I’m thrilled for an opportunity to represent Peoria and kind of put Peoria on the map and show that there’s good soccer. It’s huge.”

These guys are proud to be putting on the Peoria City jersey

“It means a lot to come back to Peoria and rep the city one more time,” Sophanavong said. “I enjoyed doing it in high school and I’m glad to be back here doing it again.”

The local stars are also thrilled to be a part of this inaugural Peoria City squad and are hoping to help grow the game even further in the Heart of Illinois.

“We’re gonna get to lay the foundation. I think there’s probably kids that look up to us in the area and we’re gonna show them what they can dream to do and the opportunities they have just here in Peoria in their back yard.”

“It’s the first time anybody’s going to see the product out on the field and we’re really excited to show everyone what Peoria City soccer is about.”
