(Heart of Illinois ABC) - More than 3,000 pieces of protective equipment is headed to Ukraine from the Illinois State Police.

ISP says the donated items include body armor, ballistic face shields and ballistic helmets.

They say that by U.S. standards, the equipment cannot be used by any law enforcement agency in the state as there is a standard five-year lifespan for most body armor in the US, but that it will still offer some protection to civilians, humanitarian aid workers and others.

If it were not donated, the equipment would be disposed of.

Illinois State Police coordinated the donation with the Illinois National Guard, Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce and the Department of State to transport the equipment as well as ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations.
