PEKIN (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The 50th Pekin Marigold Festival will be held September 8-11 and honor Senator Everett Dirksen.

Pekin hosted the first festival in 1973 as a celebration of the late Senator’s legislative legacy, according to a release.

The Pekin Marigold Festival was named after Senator Dirksen’s love for marigolds, and to this day Pekin is recognized as the Marigold Capital of the World.

Senator Dirksen was most known for his key roles in passing the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (1963), the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Open Housing Act of 1968.

“The theme is centered around the essence of traveling back in time and taking a trip down memory lane,” said 2022 chairperson Brandon Burling. “With this being the 50th Festival, we want Pekin residents and general Festival goers to recollect their favorite Marigold Memories that embody what this Festival is all about. Sharing moments that they will never forget, while also creating new ones for years to come.”
