PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Peorians gathered Thursday evening on ‘Workers Day Memorial’ to remember those who died while on the job.

It was a somber memorial for dozens of people who came out to honor those who died in the workplace.

This day commemorates the beginning of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA. Local 34 Business Manager, Paul Flynn, said it was created when more American lives were lost working in the US than in the Vietnam War in 1972.

Thursday, Flynn said they honored Scott Adams. He died in a fall while working for Caterpillar in Mapleton, in December. Flynn said it was the first death their union has had since 2007.

“This turn out just shows how everybody in our area bonds together, remembers those who gave their life for their employer at work and I’m just so grateful that everyone’s here today,” said Flynn.

Flynn said about 4,000 people died in the US while working in the past year and hopes to get that number to zero.
