Rivermen rally to beat Roanoke 3-2, take 1-0 series lead in President’s Cup finals
Peoria trailed 2-0 early in the 2nd period
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Game 1 of the SPHL President’s Cup Championship Series got off to an inauspicious start for the Peoria Rivermen on Thursday night. The Rivs fell behind 2-0 to the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs early in the second period but then a switch seemingly flipped. Peoria rattled off three unanswered goals to complete the comeback at beat Roanoke 3-2 in Game 1 of the series.
Mitch McPherson opened the scoring for the Rivermen with a power-play goal in the second period before Mike Laidley added another just five minutes later to tie the game at 2-2. Lordanthony Grissom then netted the game-winner for Peoria in the 3rd period.
The Rivermen now own a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. They look to make it a 2-0 lead on Friday night when they host Roanoke in Game 2. Puck drop is set for 7:15.
