EAST PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - It’s pretty hard to win softball games when you can’t score runs and East Peoria’s Emily Compton has made it next to impossible for opponents to win this season. The junior ace has tossed five straight shutouts over the last two weeks, including a sensational 3 no-hitters.

“I just like getting ahead and early and just trusting my teammates and then whatever happens, happens,” Compton said. “A lot of my teammates make it really easy when they’re just always behind me.”.

Her coaches have seen Compton’s game reach a new level this season.

“She’s really come into her own this year,” head coach Denee Menzione said. “She’s always had the speed with her but now she’s starting to get the spin and her spin is, spin’s her money right now.”

Compton is pitching like a seasoned vet, but this is actually her first full season of pitching at the varsity level. Before this spring, she had thrown just one varsity inning, but her coaches saw the potential she had and knew she could handle the responsibility of being the ace

“I came to her probably late last year and I said, ‘I love the way that you’re fighting and you’re competing and, in my vision, I see you as my ace no matter what happens,’” Menzione said. “She’s kinda just taken it and ran with it and she’s having a phenomenal season so far.”

And being that ace is a responsibility Comtpon has embraced wholeheartedly.

“A couple of months before the season, Menz came and talked to me about it and was like, you’re gonna do this, just keep working hard, I believe in you and everyone else does to,” Comtpon said. “I just came in and I’ve just gotta pitch. That’s where they need me this year, it’s just really amazing.”

East Peoria has needed Emily Compton be an ace in the circle and she’s done just that and then some and she’s got the Raiders primed to be a dangerous team in the Mid-Illini conference race and perhaps beyond
