Highlights from softball, baseball, track and soccer plus Morton soccer signings
(Heart of Illinois ABC) - A pair of weekend softball tournaments kicked off on Friday night. Washington is hosting the Panther Classic and beat Brimfield 7-2 in the night cap. Metamora is hosting the Margie Wright Showcase. The Redbirds fell to Tremont 5-3 in their opening game. East Peoria won two games at the Showcase, a 10-5 win over Normal U-High and a 3-0 win over Tremont behind another no-hitter from Emily Compton, her third of the season and her fifth straight shutout.
In baseball, Metamora keeps on rolling. The Redbirds won their 10th straight game with a 13-6 win over Peoria Notre Dame. In small schools action, Peoria Christian beat Brimfield 5-3. In the Twin Cities, Normal U-High beat Joliet Catholic 5-4. In the Heart of Illinois Conference, Eureka beat El Paso-Gridley 12-2.
At the Normal Community track invite, the Metamora girls beat out the host Iron by 3 points while the Ironmen took home the win on the boys side. At the Dunlap Invite, the host Eagles won both the boys and girls team events.
Dunlap soccer also tied Kaneland 1-1 at the Springfield Cyclone Invite.
