PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - It was a ‘Battle of the Badges’ in Pekin Wednesday, where firefighters squared off with police officers in their annual blood drive. The Police Department, Fire Department, and Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office faced off in the friendly competition.

They’re competing to donate the most blood on behalf of each department. ImpactLife Donor Relations Consultant Allison Guzman said, “It’s important for the Central Illinois area , because ImpactLife is the sole provider of blood products to all of our Peoria area hospitals, so all the blood collected today will be supporting local hospitals.”

Guzman added that the blood supply over the past month has gotten better and is becoming more stable. Blood is perishable and is always needed, so they hope today’s friendly competition is a huge success and beats last years collection.

Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department took first place this year, winning just by one. A total of 49 units were collected.
