Local health leaders on ending of indoor mask mandate
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Local health leaders say the pandemic is not over yet, even when the indoor mask mandate ends statewide at the end of the month.
At Thursday’s Tri-County Health Briefing, leaders said it is time to start having conversations about the end of the pandemic.
Peoria City/ County Health Administrator Monica Hendrickson says metrics continue to move in the right direction, with case totals, especially in Peoria County continuing to move sharply downward.
“There may be a time that we have to shift to stronger mitigation,” Hendrickson said. “At the same time, we’re at a point where we can start shifting toward less mitigation.”
“I don’t think it’s hard and fast, UnityPoint Health Regional Director of Pharmacy Alice Driscoll said. “I think we have to be cautious in the approach that we take to roll out any changes in our current processes.”
Leaders say vaccines for those six months to five years old are progressing. In fact, both the health department and local hospitals are already placing pre-orders for those doses, which they intend to be a three-shot series. An FDA panel will meet on the topic in the coming days.
