PEORIA COUNTY (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The first person to announce their candidacy for Peoria County Sheriff is a longtime employee. Brian Asbell recently announced he is not seeking re-election.

Blaine Duhs has been a deputy for nearly 19 years.

Duhs started patrol in 2003. The Glasford native studied Criminal Justice at Illinois Central College before joining the force.

While a deputy, he says he has served with the Central Illinois Emergency Response Team and the ILEAS Weapons of Mass Destruction Special Response Team.

If elected, Duhs’ says his focus is professionalism in uniform, combat training, and mental health resources within the jail, among other things.

“The sheriff is the conservator of peace, you know, according to Illinois Statute. My contacts inside the community speak for itself. I think I put myself out there enough, everyone knows me in my district, if they need something they know where to call,” said Duhs.

Duhs is a self defense instructor, 5th degree blackbelt and competes in Judo, a Japanese combat sport.

He’s also a husband and father of three.

The primary election is in June and he is running as a Republican.
