PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - A question many have wondered since the pandemic started: What masks are best to wear?

Now, the CDC is reportedly considering zeroing in on one mask for the best protection against the rising omicron variant: the N95 or KN95 masks.

The masks fit tighter on the face and the material in them traps small particles better than cloth masks.

“An N95 protects you against a specific type of aerosol products that are not the main way that the virus is transmitted necessarily,” Dr. Samer Sader, chief medical officer for UnityPoint Health said.

However, CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said even if you don’t wear an N95, wearing a mask is better than not wearing one at all.

“CDC continues to recommend that any mask is better than no mask,” Walensky said.

“We do encourage all Americans to wear a well fitting mask to protect themselves and prevent the spread of COVID-19. That recommendation is not going to change.”

“A regular mask is probably good enough as long as you keep a distance,” Sader said.

“If happen to have the virus right now and haven’t quite fallen ill, i don’t want to give it to anybody else.”
