PEORIA (HEART OF ILLINOIS ABC) - Peoria Police said they took two handguns off the street and arrested two people on weapons charges following a traffic stop Thursday night.

Police said in a news release they stopped a car for vehicle code violations about 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of West Moss Avenue.

An officer detected the smell of burnt cannabis while talking to the driver, according to police, and a pistol fell to the ground as a passenger got out out of the car.

Police said they found another handgun during a search of the vehicle.

Two adults were arrested for possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and not having a firearm owners identification card.

Police did not immediately release the name of the suspects, and authorities did not say whether the guns were loaded.
