TREMONT (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The salt dome at the Tazewell County Highway Department took some heavy damage Friday.

Crews were out cleaning up the debris Saturday morning.

County engineer Craig Fink said he got a call around 9 p.m. Friday about the salt dome being blown off.

Fink said he was thankful no one was hurt when that dome came down.

“We knew that it had some age to it and was a little more susceptible than it was when it was new, [but] didn’t know it was this susceptible,” Fink said.

“So we actually were looking at repairing it for $180,000.”

Fink says there’s about 1,500 tons of salt in the facility.

He said the next step is figuring out a place to store all of the salt while figuring out how to build a new dome.
