PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Unseasonably warm temperatures in the Heart of Illinois, coupled with strong forcing and moisture advection aloft, have created an environment that is suitable for severe weather in the region this evening. December severe weather events are rare in the HEart of Illinois but not totally unheard of and with the shifting seasons due to climate change, they will become more common as the decades progress.

First the discussion of the threats themselves starting with the timing. We are looking at the severe threats happening between the hours of 8 PM and 2 AM, adding another wrinkle of danger in this being a nighttime event.

Wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour are possible this evening. Large hail is not expected but we can’t rule out smaller sizes of hail, pea up to nickel-sized hail is possible.

A few tornadoes are possible this evening. Be sure to have the HOIABC mobile app or any weather app that can send you location-based severe weather alerts. That is often the quickest and easiest way for you to be alerted to something you need to know at the moment it is happening.

Much of the Heart of Illinois is under a level 2 out of 5 (slight) risk for severe weather, as issued by the Storm Prediction Center. Large portions of McLean, Tazewell, Macon, and all of Logan County are under a level 3 (enhanced) risk for severe weather. A level 4 risk has been issued for portions of southern Illinois and Western Kentucky.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area take proper shelter immediately. An interior room, away from windows, external walls, and doors are best. These rooms tend to be closets, bathrooms, or hallways. If you have a basement, that is the best place by far. Wherever you take shelter, take a blanket or mattress to cover yourself with, maybe a helmet to protect your head if you have one.

With the threat of severe weather being mainly during the hours where most would be sleeping, please make sure you have an alert system that can wake you up, whether it be a weather radio or alerts on your phone with your phone’s audio turned all the way up.
