ISU’s governing board to weigh in on proposed $11.5 million domed practice site for football, other sports
NORMAL (25 NEWS) - Illinois State University’s governing board will meet in special session Saturday to consider the athletic department’s plan for an $11.5 million indoor practice facility for football and other sports.
A report to ISU’s board of trustees says the athletic department has raised almost $7 million for the project, about $1 million short of the $8 million needed to start construction of the inflatable dome, to be located on ISU’s current football practice field north of Horton Fieldhouse.
The dome would be 69 feet high and long enough to fit a 100 yard field.
The athletic department intends to fund the project through private fundraising, borrowing, and some unspent athletic department funds.
Athletic Department staff said the indoor facility would reduce scheduling pressure for use of the existing fieldhouse, which is nearly 60-years old.
Maintenance and other costs would be covered by renting the facility to community groups when ISU is not using it at night and on weekends.
The trustees’ meeting is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
