Local group advocates non-violence through positive music lyrics
PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The Don’t Start initiative encourages kids and youth members to make good choices by using positive music lyrics. Founders Dr. Joe Couri and Warith Muhammud created the Don’t Start song in 2017 warning people how negative music lyrics can promote dangerous choices.
“A message of prevention. A message not to start down the wrong path of gang activity, drug abuse, gun violence bullying, vaping.. Any destructive behaviors,” says Dr. Couri.
Principal Dr. Noreen Dillon encouraged students to talk to their parents about the message the heard today. She says as a parent herself it’s important parents have these conversations with their children.
“I think it’s really important to talk to your children about the potential things that can happen.. To help provide support and maybe direction and let them know that as a parent I’m here for you regardless of what path you might find yourself in,” said Dr. Dillon.
The music video portrays young people purchasing drugs, committing crimes and facing the consequences of those actions. Warith Muhammad says kids are never too young to here a positive message because they’ve already ready being introduced to more mature content telling them to do the opposite.
“It’s very important for the parents to let the kids know that a lot of stuff that’s being said in music today is destructive, it’s negative.. It’s trying to lead you down a path that can potentially destroy and take your life. I usually ask the kids have you heard of this artist have you heard of this drug and you see hands raising,” says Muhammad.
