(Heart of Illinois ABC) - Wednesday was the opening night of Missouri Valley Conference play for both Bradley and Illinois State and both the Braves and Redbirds won in thrilling fashion.

Bradley used a 20-point performance from Terry Roberts to top Northern Iowa 71-69. The Braves led 69-67 with 12 seconds to play when the Panthers AJ Brown hit a turnaround jumper to tie the game. Brown had 30 to lead all scorers. The Braves then brought the ball over half court and called timeout with 9 seconds to go. Out of the timeout, Roberts got the ball at the top of the key, blew past his defender, euro-stepped in the lane and twisted in a beautiful layup to take the lead. Brown then missed the would-be game-winner as time expired to secure a Bradley win.

Meanwhile, Illinois State was also locked in a battle at Redbird Arena as they hosted Missouri State. The Redbirds trailed by three with just about 30 seconds remaining in the game when Josiah Strong drilled a corner triple to tie the game at 64 and send it to overtime. In overtime, Antonio Reeves took over and led ISU to a 75-71 win.

In D3 hoops, Illinois Wesleyan blew past the University of Chicago 83-50 behind 18 points from Cory Noe and 17 points from Bloomington Central Catholic product Luke Yoder.
