UPDATE: Teenager identified as Peoria’s 33rd homicide victim

UPDATE (12:41 p.m. Friday) - The Peoria County Coroner has identified the City’s 33rd homicide victim of 2021.

Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts, 18-year-old Matthew C. Smith was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center at 11:39 a.m. Thursday.

An autopsy is in progress, and the cause of death will be released after its conclusion.

UPDATE (2:08 p.m.) - Peoria Police said it was an 18-year old man shot to death late Thanksgiving morning in the 300 block of East Thrush Avenue.

According to a police department news release, the ShotSpotter alert indicate five rounds were fired about 11:05 a.m.

The 18-year old was taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center, and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim’s identity and cause of death will be released later by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.

The police department said its criminal investigations division is working on leads to identify a suspect.

UPDATE - Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria addressed the news media about the Thanksgiving homicide.

“It’s Thanksgiving. It’s unfortunate that, on a day like this, that we need to be out here for a crime such as this. We’ll be out. We’ll continue to knock on doors and continue to follow up on any leads. And if you know something, say something,” the chief said.

PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Police confirmed one person, a male, was shot to death late Thursday morning in Peoria’s East Bluff.

Police were called about 11:05 a.m. to the 300 block of East Thrush Avenue after receiving a ShotSpotter alert.

No information has been released about the shooting victim. Police also have not released information about a suspect, although officers were interviewing people in the neighborhood.

A Heart of Illinois ABC news crew reported seeing three evidence markers on the ground.

Thursday morning’s shooting is Peoria’s 33rd homicide of 2021.
