PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Winter is almost here, which means it’s time for you and your family to start getting ready so you can be safe when cold and snow return.

Being prepared for winter weather starts at home.

Here are some good safety tips you and your family can follow to be ready this winter.

- Make sure you have ways to stay warm, including extra fuel and blankets, extra jackets, etc.

- Have your home winterized to help keep it warmer, including insulating walls, attics, doors and windows.

- Cover your windows to help keep heat in. A plastic cover is a simple way to do this.

- When shoveling snow, don’t over-exert yourself and take breaks. Shoveling snow is more difficult when wet snow is on the ground, so be mindful of the conditions outside.

- If your power goes out, you can stay warm by closing doors to rooms that you are not in, filling the gap at the bottom of doors with towels, rags, clothing, etc., wear extra layers and closing any window blinds and curtains.

- Having an emergency supply kit.

Here is a list of some things you can include in a home emergency supply kit.
